that is. This leads to deeper trust of your own internal
guidance and creativity. The class will primarily use the
versatile medium of acrylic, layering transparent colors and

knives, spattering and imprinting along with pouring layers of

"Ink, Brush and Paper" with Mike Grady $275
June 8-9-10 (10am – 5pm)
An introduction to East Asian approaches to art. Emphasis
will placed on the use of 'chi' – vital life energy – as the
basis for artistic expression using traditional Chinese artistic
approaches. The workshop will explore traditional East Asian
tools such as sumi-ink, traditional bamboo brushes and rice
paper. In-class exercises will explore the basic skills of
brushwork and 'flow (liu)' by learning basic Chinese characters
and then to incorporate the principles of calligraphic painting
into personalized artistic styles that allow workshop
participants to create their own unique blend of Asian and
European artistic styles. Ink-wash and watercolor techniques
will also be explored as essential elements of East-West
approaches to art. We will explore Chinese and Japanese
approaches to calligraphy and landscape genres and explore the
connection between body, mind and creative flow that makes East
Asian art unique. Students will be encouraged to develop their
own artistic approaches using traditional Chinese tools rather
than attempting to 'master' traditional East Asian techniques.
